10 TRAVEL TIPS

  • Exchange currency at local currency exchanges after researching the best rate of exchange city wide. Never cash in all your money on the first day. Exchanges can vary widely from day to day.
  • Make an attempt to humbly speak a foreign language and ask for help. The natives will appreciate your efforts.
  • Leave all your valuables, passport, etc. locked up in a room or hotel safe.
  • Don't wear fanny packs or big purses. It makes you look like a tourist and therefore a mark for thieves. Carry as much as you can out of sight in your pockets.
  • Invest in a small pocket camera and carry it in an inside pocket.
  • Make photocopies of your passport, drivers license, health insurance documents, etc. and leave multiple copies in your room, suitcase, and give a set to your travelling companion. Carry copies, not originals, when out and about.
  • Travel like the locals do, on subways, buses, taxis. You'll save money and learn a lot more about your locale.
  • Notify a family member or friend what your itinierary is and when you'll return.
  • If you are shopping in an inexpensive local market and it's really dirt cheap, don't "negotiate" that extra ten cents off. It means little to you and a lot to a poor local.
  • Take advantage of concierges, local tourist offices, websites, waiters and guides.
