Do I plan ahead to avoid impact?

Do I travel to avoid impact?

O Travel quietly
O Walk single-file in center of trail
O Stay on main trail even if wet
O Never shortcut switchbacks
O Look at and photograph, never pick and collect
O Avoid popular areas
O Never discard cigarette butts, candy or gum wrappers
O Walk softly. Never kick up dirt and stones or trample vegetation

Do I make No-Trace camps?

O Select a site invisible from tthe trail and other sites
O Camp at least 25 feet from natural water sources and "beauty spots"
O Avoid using existing campsites that are obviously over camped
O Never cut standing trees and vegetation or pull up plants
O Never dig hipholes or trenches
O Wear light weight, soft sole shoes around camp
O Avoid building campfires or make only small fires in safe places
O Never wash dirty dishes, clothes, or myself directly in stream or spring
O Use biodegradable soap 100 feet away from water supply
O Bury human waste 6 inches deep 100 feet from water
O Stay as quiet as possible. Leave radios and tape players at home
O Leave my dog at home

Do I leave a No-Trace campsite?

O Pick up every trace of litter
O Drown my campfire and erase evidence of it
O Replace and scatter twigs and leaves cleared for sleeping bags
O Pack out all garbage
O Check for any evidence of my stay
